How Long Should Physical Therapy Take?

How Long Should Physical Therapy Take?Jan 12th  2012

How long will physical therapy take is a common question asked by many patients. The problem is, there is no easy answer to this question. Each person is different, and thus an individual’s rate of healing is also different. In some cases, it may take one person a week to complete a particular exercise, but with another person with the same injury,  physical therapy maybe two to three weeks for that same exercise.

To Rest or Not to Rest?

To Rest or Not to Rest?Jan 11th  2011

To Rest or Not to Rest?

The old school mentality for initial recommendations after back injury described a period of bed rest for recovery time. This however, is no longer viewed as beneficial in the healing process as proven by current research. If there is no physical intervention, the muscles of the back can become weak from inactivity, delaying recovery time.

Advance Physical & Aquatic TherapyCurrent studies recommend gentle back stretching and continuing with current day to day activities with modifications to alleviate strain on the back region.

Need a Knee Replacement?

Need a Knee Replacement?Oct 4th  2010

If you are experiencing knee pain and it has affected your everyday activities then consult your physician to see if a knee replacement will benefit you. Also, your doctor may prescribe a conservative course of Physical Therapy before surgery. This will strengthen the muscles above and below the knee joint in order to increase knee strength, in preparation for the loss of strength post-surgery. Meanwhile, here is a video showing an animated version of the surgery.

Ankle Sprains and You!

Ankle Sprains and You!Aug 26th  2010

The ligaments surrounding the ankle are surprisingly fragile.  What can be a seemingly harmless motion has the potential to cause serious ankle sprains. Ankle ligaments are elastic structures that hold the ankle joint together to prevent (or minimize) excessive twisting and turning that can lead to injury. These ligaments are able to stretch slightly to accommodate normal movements, but as with everything, they have an inherent limit. When they are stretched beyond their natural limits, the result is a painful sprain.

What are Anti-oxidants?

What are Anti-oxidants?Jul 6th  2010

I was talking with friends this Fourth of July weekend as we were roasting in the sun, and the topic came up about what really are, anti-oxidants. I told them about free radicals, oxidation and so on, but I thought about this article that explained it really well and maybe a lot of other people wonder the same thing. Pills or PT

Pills or PTApr 20th  2010

In a recent article in Mens Health Magazine called “Say No to Drugs” by T.E. Holt MD, an interesting point was highlighted:

“Drugs can only patch what’s broken. Some do it better than others, but no matter how good the drug, there are things in life that just don’t patch very well. Better to take the effort to keep those things whole than to count on some chemical to glue them back together.”

This statement made me realize how important a role Physical Therapists play in educating people alternative means to improve their health.
